Dit boek biedt een overzicht van alle klassieke overtuigingsmiddelen. Daarbij wordt teruggegrepen op de klassiekeretorica, maar bij de behandeling wordt zo weinig mogelijk gebruik gemaaktvan Grieks en Latijn en de gebruikte voorbeelden zijn overwegend hedendaags. Het overzicht legt een basis voor een analyse van alle retorische aspecten van mondelinge en schriftelijke betogen. Van zowel de inhoud, de opbouw, de stijlals de presentatie. Maar belangrijker is dat met de gemaakte onderscheidingen ook een weloverwogen oordeel gevormd kan worden over de overtuigingskracht of effectiviteit van een bepaald betoog.
